Hassyan Clean Coal Project, region’s first coal-based power plant

Based in Saih Shuaib, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Hassyan Clean Coal Project is an Ultra-Supercritical (USC) power plant valued at 3.42 billion USD. Construction of the power plant began in November 2016. The power plant comprises 4 600MW units with a total output of 2,400MW. Operations of these units were set to begin from March 2020 onwards.

A joint venture formed between Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and the consortium of ACWA Power, Harbin Electric and the Silk Road Fund, the power plant intends to contribute to the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050.

Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 plans to generate 25% of energy from solar power, 61% from gas by 2030,  7% from clean coal and 7% from nuclear power. Upon completion, the Hassyan Clean coal is expected to generate sufficient electricity power to 250,000 households in Dubai.
